Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII Announced

Today Square-Enix has announced a third entry into the Final Fantasy XIII series. The new game is not called Final Fantasy XIII-3 but Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII. The game as of now is slated for a 2013 release date. According to Square-Enix: “Lightning Returns will incorporate a brand-new story, world, characters and an enhanced gameplay system.”  They also said that the game will; obviously, cast you as Lightning as a solo playable character in a world which you can traverse freely.

Other details regarding the game are very limited at this stage. We do know that the main story takes place hundreds of years after Final Fantasy XIII-2, set in a world called Novus Partus which is composed of four islands connected by monorail. We also know that the games art direction is gothic, mechanical and fantasy.

The craziest thing about Lightning Returns is the doomsday countdown. According to Square-Enix, the world will end after 13 days, and a clock will count down constantly in the corner of the screen to indicate this looming deadline. Any action players take will spend time and hasten the end of days.

As we stated above, Lightning will be the only playable character. This means players will have a ton of control over customizing her looks and combat style. The battle system is a modified version of the previous two and will feature real-time elements including direct control of Lightning’s movement and her attacks, as well as time-based moves that drain the doomsday counter. The game will also include a real-time block system, designed to make battles much more active and time-based. If you die mid battle, the game will also let you rewind to correct your mistake, but at the expense of the doomsday clock.

Square-Enix has confirmed that Lightning Returns will be the last game in the Lightning Saga.
