Cosplay Introduction - Minjee Kay Cosplay

Hi guys, this is my first post since the merging of Nerdburgh with SpiderDuck, so let me introduce myself! My name is Minjee, I run a cosplay page on Facebook called Minjee Kay Cosplay and I’ve been cosplaying for almost two years. This isn’t very long considering everyone I know who cosplays has been doing so for close to eight years, but I think I’ve immersed myself enough to be able to bring you some interesting posts on the community and the craft. I’m hoping to be able to feature cosplayers and write about the many controversies that happen within the community, so look forward to that, in addition to convention coverage and photoshoots.

I first became interested in cosplay in 2009, my senior year of high school. My brother and I went to Animation & Gaming Ohio, a tiny convention held in Cincinnati, at which Yaya Han was a cosplay guest. I don’t remember what cosplays she was wearing, but I do remember watching her walk up and down the stage in costume. I thought that was probably the coolest thing you could do at a convention!

Fast forward about two years and I made my first costume, Yoko Littner from Gurren Lagann. I wore it as a Halloween costume in 2010 and then promptly forgot about cosplay at all until January of 2013, when I went to Ohayocon and attempted to make five costumes in the span of a month. Needless to say that didn’t work out, but I did manage to finish two of them for Ohayocon and two others within the month after. Since then I’ve vastly improved and am a lot better about spacing my projects out.

The most recent convention I attended was Otakon 2014; it was my first time going and it was really exciting! I did manage to put together four costumes in a month for this one, but I still can’t say that it was the most pleasant way to make costumes. The most exciting part of Otakon was meeting Yaya Han again. I was a little over eager and babbled on about how she got me interested in cosplay five years ago but she was very sweet and even asked for a selfie with me!

This is getting a bit long so I’ll wrap it up. My interest and involvement in cosplay has influenced my life in a pretty drastic way. It has brought me closer to friends I met outside of cosplay but was able to spend more time with in photoshoots and at conventions, and has also directed me towards an entirely different career choice than I had previously considered. I started out studying Neuroscience but have switched to taking theatre classes and I’ll be applying for grad school in Costume Design/Production in the near future.

So there’s a whole lot of information about me, sorry for going a bit overboard. My next post will definitely focus on other cosplayers so please check back!
